Have you ever felt stuck, unable to move forward despite your best efforts? You're not alone. Many of us struggle with underlying issues that prevent us from achieving our goals.

In this blog post, I delve into key insights from Dr. Nicole LePera's book, How to Do the Work: Recognize Your Patterns, Heal from Your Past, and Create Yourself, which explores the mind-body connection, trauma, and effective strategies for healing. I also covered my takeaways from this book in the third episode of my podcast, Books to Better Your Life.

Whether you're new to self-development or a seasoned reader, these insights can help you understand and overcome the obstacles in your path.

Before we get into it, let's talk about the title. If you're not familiar with that idea of doing the work, it's really to be looking at yourself and taking steps to improve yourself, especially at an emotional level. What this looks like is different for everybody. Maybe that's therapy, maybe that's meditation, journaling, etc. Dr. LePera does give ideas at the end of each chapter for what to try, especially around journaling.

A New Look at Trauma

As a psychotherapist, Dr. LePera, integrates theoretical knowledge, patient observations, and personal experiences to provide a comprehensive guide on self-regulation and healing.

She introduces a fresh perspective on trauma, emphasizing that it can stem from seemingly minor childhood experiences – what I would call “little T” traumas – versus what has typically been considered trauma or “capital T” trauma – war, sexual or physical abuse, natural disasters, and so on. Traditional trauma scales like the ACE (Adverse Childhood Experience) test may not capture the little T forms of trauma, which can still significantly impact our lives.

A key area Dr. LePera focuses on is the feeling of safety. Instances as a child where we had our sense of safety threatened could result in a trauma. By broadening the definition of trauma, Dr. LePera encourages us to acknowledge and address these hidden wounds that often go unrecognized and untreated and result in chronic stress that impacts our mental and physical health.

The Stress Impact on Bodily Functions

Stress doesn't just affect our minds; it has profound implications for our physical health. Drawing parallels with The Body Keeps the Score, Dr. LePera explains how chronic stress can lead to issues like brain fog, memory problems, and even serious conditions like autoimmune diseases and heart disease.

Understanding this connection is crucial for holistic healing.

Understanding Polyvagal Theory

Polyvagal theory, developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, is a cornerstone of Dr. LePera's approach. This theory explains how the vagus nerve connects major organs to the brain and plays a pivotal role in our stress responses.

By learning how to regulate this system, we can better manage stress and improve our overall well-being.

The Comfort of Familiar Emotions

Our brains can become addicted to the emotional states we experienced in childhood, even if they were traumatic! This emotional addiction can manifest in self-sabotaging behaviors and cycles of stress.

Recognizing this pattern is the first step toward breaking free and creating healthier emotional responses.

Practical Healing Techniques

Dr. LePera offers several actionable strategies for healing, including improving gut health, sleep, breathing, movement, and incorporating play into our lives. These techniques help strengthen the mind-body connection and promote self-regulation.

One inspiring story from the book highlights how small, consistent habits (which James Clear advocates for in his book Atomic Habits) can lead to significant improvements in health and well-being. A woman experiencing a multiple sclerosis relapse challenged herself to have a glass of water every day. this single self-care habit expanded into many supportive habits, and she recovered enough to walk again and continue living independently.

How to Do the Work provides valuable insights into understanding and healing from trauma. By recognizing the mind-body connection and employing practical strategies for self-regulation, we can overcome the obstacles that hold us back. This book is a powerful resource for anyone looking to make meaningful changes in their life.
